SAILING
The sails teach that it is not enough to explain, to show that you have understood the wind. - LiberaMente - @emituitt-
The origins of the sailboat are still much debated today. It is not easy, in fact, to know precisely when for the first time man managed to use the wind to move in the sea. The first traces of boats driven by the wind date back as far as 6000 B.C. but it was the Egyptians, with their boats made with papyrus reeds, the first to make a massive use of them around 4000 B.C. Later Greeks , Phoenicians and Arabs, who most likely learned to sail from the Egyptians, used their sailboats to dominate the seas. For these civilizations and for at least a thousand years, the main type of sailing ship was the square arm. A square sail designed to have the wind blowing from behind push the boat forward. A simple and effective idea that had its limits. You could sail, in fact, ONLY running with the wind behind you and that was not very convenient if the destination was in the opposite direction. The only alternative was to use the oars. As technology improved, the sails began to be cut differently, in the most familiar triangular shape we see today. Materials have also changed, from natural fabrics such as hemp and cotton to nylon and polyester. The history of modern sports sailing is rooted in the fight against piracy.During the seventeenth century, the routes of the East Indies, Africa and the Americas were infested with pirates and the Dutch ships, were highly coveted prey. To respond to these threats, the Dutch developed fast and agile sailing ships called "jachtschip" (from the Dutch "jacht", which means searching, hunting, pursuing) to chase and capture pirate vessels. It was around the middle of the seventeenth century that the English monarch Charles II, exiled in Holland, discovered the fast Dutch sailing ships (named by them jachtship) used to hunt pirates thanks to the speed and agility of movement they allowed. On his return to England, the king took one of those boats with him and built his own, which he then challenged the Duke of York in what can be considered the very first race between Greenwich and Gravesend. Thus came 1715 when the first competition in the history of modern sailing, the Cumberland Regatta (still held today), while the first international competition was, in 1851, the famous Coppa delle Cento Ghinee, better known as the America’s Cup
