MOTORCYCLING
Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul. - Anonymous
With the invention of steam engines and bicycles, scientists of the 19th century soon realized that the combination of these two technologies could substantially improve transport on public roads. The American Sylvester Howard Roper (1823-1896) invented a two-cylinder steam velocipede in 1867. A velocipede is an early form of bicycle in which the pedals are attached to the front wheel. Roper’s invention can be considered the first motorcycle if the definition of motorcycle is allowed to include a coal-powered steam engine. Over the next 10 years dozens of different models appeared for self-propelled bicycles, but it is widely recognized that the first to use a gasoline internal combustion engine was the creation of the German Gottlieb Daimler and his partner Wilhelm Maybach. From the first bike in history built in 1894 by Gottlieb Daimler, the step to the first motorcycling races in France was short. The first ever motorcycle race was held in England at Richmond on 29 November 1897. C. Jarriot won in a Fournier. In 1906 the Isle of Man became the protagonist of a Tourist Trophy that is still held today, and in the following decades the competitions expanded to the rest of Europe. It began to talk about the World Championship in 1949 divided into categories 500 cc, 350 cc, 250 cc and 125 cc. Gilera, MV Agusta, Moto Guzzi were reliable and winning brands. In the 1960s, some Japanese teams entered the competition. First Honda, which immediately achieved great success in the 250 cc and 350 cc classes, and then to follow Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki. In 2002, the 500 cc two-stroke engines were replaced with 990 cc four-stroke engines. Today the Motogp has a starting grid that sees lined up from 20 to 24 drivers (three each row) decided by the time they get the day before the race.
