THE ORIGINS OF SPORT

CYCLING

The Bicycle is the transcription of energy in balance, the exaltation of momentum, the visible image of the wind. It tends to fly; it shaves but does not touch the earth.
- Cesare Angelini -

Cycling is one of the most popular and increasingly loved sports. Its history inevitably intertwines with that of cycling. Leonardo da Vinci had already designed a pedal machine and in 1818 the idea was taken up by the German Baron Karl Dreis with the "DRAISINA", a wooden bike equipped with handlebars and saddle, similar in design to today’s bike. It was made entirely of wood and was pushed with the feet instead of pedaling. The invention of the modern bicycle is attributed to the Scottish blacksmith Kirkpatric Macmillan who added to the DRAISINA a pedal system tied directly to the front wheel. From the beginning the vehicle was used to organize competitive challenges often really exhausting but arousing great enthusiasm among fans, especially in Italy and France.
The first documented cycling race was held on May 31, 1868 near Paris, on a stretch of 1200 meters inside the park of Saint-Cloud. The winner was James Moore, an Englishman living in France who the following year also won the first race between two cities, namely Paris - Rouen. Some of the races held at that time were destined to become classics, is the case of Paris - Roubaix, It is characterized by stretches of cobblestones and inspired by a group of daredevils who set out from the outskirts of Paris to the north of France with the intention of covering 250 km by midnight.
During the 19th century, the addition of steering, pedals, speed, rubber tires and metal frames improved the original design of the bicycle. But it was nevertheless, with the invention of the Rover in 1885, by John Kemp Starley, cycling as a pastime, sport and means of transport that became'.
These were the years of the birth of the great stage races, like the Giro d'Italia in 1909 only preceded by the Tour de France in 1903.

The design of this scarf tries to evoke the emotions of this sport, tell its history and its evolution.
