Melange ties

Filter

Impossible to reproduce identically from one pattern to the next, the nuances of a melange tie are truly astonishing.

This type of yarn consists of the combination of two, three or four threads of different colours in varying proportions. And it is precisely this variability that transforms the melange yarn into an ever-changing mixture of colours, creating plays of shades and irregular nuances. The weave is nuanced, with a clearly recognisable base colour and a thousand other highlights that overlap the dominant shade. In French, the word melange means precisely mixing, blending.

It is probably in France that the origins of this multicoloured weave must be sought. Although there is no certainty as to who had the brilliant intuition to mix threads of different colours, it seems that melange draws its inspiration from the world of embroidery.

From its origins to the present day, many variations of melange yarn have been produced. Fumagalli 1891 has given its own interpretation by proposing melange ties in different styles. The patterns, all of the company's historical archives, are the most varied: from exotic paisley to geometric and abstract patterns, any print takes on a unique charm if it is realised with the technique of mixing colours.
